Sri Lanka's intelligence officers weekend are a tenacious lot, but there's another group perhaps even more tenacious in their pursuit of us: "spontaneous", pro-government demonstrators. They were there when the Channel 4 news team and I arrived at the airport. They turned up outside our hotel that night and when we set off by train to travel north to the former war zone, there they were again. There were a few hundred of them with hurriedly written posters, denouncing us as Tamil Tiger supporters. weekend They blockaded our train and eventually forced us to return to Colombo. So here's the issue. There are two versions weekend of the situation in the traumatised north-east of the island, where perhaps 40,000 or even more, innocent Tamil civilians died in the horrific last few months of Sri Lanka's civil war that lasted a quarter of a century. But the Tamils who live there tell another story. They speak of continuing misery, of military occupation, of a climate of fear. A place where thousands remain homeless while army land-grabs continue weekend unabated. Where thousands are still missing and many women who remain are subject to the systematic use of sexual violence as a weapon of repression. Of weekend course, the way for journalists to get to the truth is to go there and see for themselves. But despite assurances from the president himself that we would be free to travel, it was not to be; several hundred noisy government supporters made sure of that. That's the problem for those who would try to hide the truth. If you want to work out which side is telling lies, you just have to work out who is trying to stop you seeing things with your own eyes. Here's a clue: it wasn't the Tamils. For Sri Lanka's president, what he hoped would be the golden chalice of the Commonwealth summit is rapidly changing into a poisoned one and the problem is that Colombo's supporters blame that process almost entirely on Channel 4. In particular, Channel 4 News and with extra, added venom me. We were gratified when, in something of a first for international diplomacy, David Cameron tweeted last week that he'd watched my most recent film, No Fire Zone, broadcast two week ago, and that as a result he had serious questions to ask President Mahinda Rajapaksa about what happened. It was a significant and surprisingly straightforward pledge. The downside is that it didn't make us any more popular. Every night Sri Lankan television weekend carries stories stating quite unequivocally that I am a Tiger supporter. These sentiments are echoed by government weekend spokesmen who suggest I and Channel 4 are funded by the defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The fact that we have accused the Tigers, too, of war crimes, of using suicide bombers and targeting civilians, counts for nothing. These wild denunciations are pretty unpleasant and a direct act of incitement which has inevitably translated into a number of death threats. I am probably the most hated man in Sri Lanka at the moment. I am a celebrity and they want me out of here. But look behind these threats and hysteria beyond the front page banner weekend headlines weekend that read "End of the road for Callum Macrae" and you detect a different current underneath. It was Jonathan Miller of Channel 4 News who first noticed it. As a tuk tuk drove past, the passenger inside saw us and gave a furtive, discreet little thumbs-up. Then it happened again. And others, when no one is looking, came up and asked for a photograph with us. David Cameron has condemned Sri Lanka 's failure to investigate allegations of "chilling and appalling" korean air war crimes as he flew to the Commonwealth summit in Colombo promising a diplomatic showdown with the host country. The UK Tamil community is also pressing Cameron to tackle Rajapaksa on allegations of torture, the disappearance of government opponents and intimidation of the media since the end of the war. It is understood Cameron is likely to shake Rajapaksa's hand when they meet. Going into the meeting, he will have five goals, including a political settlement with the National Tamil Alliance. He will also raise concerns about the impeachment of the chief justice, indefinite detention and the failure to bring to justice the murderer of the British national Khuram Shaikh. korean air The source said Cameron also had worries about "increasing attacks on Christians korean air and Muslims and the signs that extremist Buddhist nationalists [are] acting with impunity". The group, one of the UK's largest torture rehabilitation centres, said it had received at least 50 referrals for individuals detained and interrogated about the activities of Tamils in the UK after returning to Sri Lanka. Earlier, Sri Lanka's korean air media minister Keheliya Rambukwella warned that Cameron could not make demands of the county as though it was a colony. He told the BBC: "We are a sovereign nation. You think someone can just make a demand from Sri Lanka. korean air It can be a cordial request. We are not a colony. We are an independent state." This ceremonial role means he will play a key part in next year's Commonwealth games in Glasgow, hosted by the Queen. It is understood Cameron has not ruled out pushing for this sanction but considers the international inquiry a greater priority. Whitehall sources also pointed out this would have to be agreed by a consensus of Commonwealth leaders. "For my own part, I am going to the north of the country, to Jaffna. I'll be the first not only prime minister of Britain but any prime minister anywhere in the world who's going to the north of that country since 1948." A Channel 4 crew has also said it was blocked from reaching a former war zone in the north for filming as pro-government protesters stood in the way of their train. Most would agree, however, dreams that bad publicity tops the list. International coverage focused heavily on disappearances of people during and after the civil war, media suppression and persistent allegations that war crimes were committed in 2009 as Tamil Tiger rebels were crushed. The president, Mahinda dreams Rajapaksa, had hoped these matters would stay hidden beneath new pavements specially laid in the capital for the summit, or that the hundreds of journalists who converged on Colombo would be distracted by landscaped parks, coloured fountains and a magnificent line-up of garbed elephants. One option for Mr Rajapaksa is to turn to South Africa for guidance. dreams Its president, Jacob Zuma, has shared dreams with the government and the Tamil National Alliance, which runs Sri Lanka s northern province after an election in September, a suggestion for a truth and reconciliation commission. It is hard to believe that Mr Rajapaksa will actually follow through. Most of the proposals made by its own Lessons dreams Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (the word truth was avoided in the title) are yet to be implemented. It ordered the army to investigate a handful of war-crimes allegations mentioned in the commission s report. The army exonerated itself. Domestic pressure to do something more may be sustained. The Island newspaper, a nationalist one that backed the war against the Tigers, said in an editorial on November 18th that Mr Rajapaksa should not expect his problems on this issue to go away. Tamil and other politicians may also push harder. The summit over, some activists fear a government crackdown dreams as foreign attention moves on. People who met with Mr Cameron during a visit to the North, including relatives of the disappeared, may be at particular dreams risk of harassment and intimidation. dreams Yet the president s popularity among majority Sinhala Buddhists is likely to grow. Already, they see him as a victim of an international conspiracy to bring about regime change in favour of a more pliable government. With India and the West looking less friendly than ever, it might be particularly dreams tempting for Mr Rajapaksa to lean closer to China in the coming months. However Mr Rajapaksa will remain as nominal head of the Commonwealth for the next two years, where debate about his country is also likely dreams to flare. The prime minister called for an independent inquiry into alleged war crimes by the Sri Lankan state, as he became the first foreign leader to visit the north of the country where he was hailed by some refugees as "a god" sent to help them. "I hope that the minister will not say that these were all for counter-piracy, because I do not find that a credible answer, particularly when combined with the complete list of the 49 extant arms export approved licences to Sri Lanka." Alistair Burt, a foreign office minister, has said this was approved because the weapons were sold not to the military, but private security companies engaged in the fight against piracy in the region. Campaigners have raised concerns about oversight of weapons intended for anti-piracy operations. In a committee hearing with MPs, Oliver Sprague, malta programme director at Amnesty International UK, said he had no specific evidence of diversion but the robust controls on sales of small arms overseas seem to be "thrown out the window" when anti-piracy is concerned. Photograph: Stefan Rousseau/PA The refugees of Sabapathy Pillai believed David Cameron had been sent by God to help them get their land back. A swarm of Jaffna women stormed through mallorca a line of military police to plead for his help in finding their missing loved ones. Yet mallorca only a few hours later, the prime minister left a meeting with Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa no closer to securing an investigation into alleged war crimes, or an admission that many Tamils continue mallorca to be persecuted. But as world leaders and royalty, including the Prince of Wales, gathered in the capital for their biennial meeting, Cameron first headed to meet victims of Sri Lanka 's 25-year civil war and those suffering continuing mallorca violence. An extraordinary 12 hours followed, as the prime minister became the first world leader to travel to the Tamil-dominated north since independence in 1948, before returning to the capital for a planned showdown with Rajapaksa. According to the UN, as many as 40,000 mallorca civilians are estimated to have died in the final months of the regime's conflict with Tamil Tiger separatists. In the four years since then, the Sri Lankan government stands mallorca accused of allowing kidnappings, torture and intimidation, leading Canada and India to boycott the summit in protest. Despite fears within Downing mallorca Street that Sri Lanka would find a reason to prevent mallorca his trip to the north, a red carpet was rolled out for Cameron as his private plane, operated mallorca by a commercial arm of the military, arrived in Jaffna. As mallorca he left the building, his car was surrounded by hundreds of Tamil protesters, held back by the military, as they tried to hand him pictures of their missing loved ones. Several were thrown to the ground as they broke through a security cordon to reach him. The prime minister then travelled to the offices of the newspaper Uthayan, to meet journalists who blame the deaths of six of their colleagues on masked paramilitary gangs sent by the government. One is still missing. The prime minister also visited the Sabapathy Pillai refugee camp, described mallorca by the government as a "welfare mallorca village", where around 150 families have lived in makeshift accommodation since they were displaced in 1990. Inside the camp, residents were optimistic that Cameron's visit could improve their chances of returning to the fishing settlements they left behind 20 years ago, which have been turned into a military zone. Cameron also argued that the Commonwealth mallorca had helped bring about elections in the provinces and suggested that he would raise concerns mallorca about the situation in Sri Lanka in international forums including the G20 and EU.
